Gilad’s Meaningful Bar Mitzvah

Print this ArticleOct 10, 07

Gilad*, now thirteen years old, has been at Aleh since he was five. He arrived at Aleh completely dependent for the most basic functions, yet his reactions showed a great deal of motivation and potential. His dedicated therapists were determined to capitalize upon his abilities and give him every possible opportunity to grow.

Gilad slowly learned to help dress and feed himself. Eventually he joined a regular kindergarten once a week for morning activities, including regular play and learning, friends, playground fun, songs, music and social activity. He integrated so well that the kindergarten children never even realized he was cognitively disabled!

This year Gilad celebrated his bar mitzvah. His devoted parents, who are very involved in his care, made him a beautiful affair in a hotel. Aleh prepared a video presentation of Gilad’s achievements and his mother spoke in his name. Gilad sat at the head table, beaming and smiling at being an equal among equals.

The souvenirs given out at the bar mitzvah were pretty necklaces and fragrant soap molds that Gilad, his friends and family had made together as part of Aleh’s Creative Arts Workshop Program.

The highlight of the affair was a trip to the Kotel, with Gilad accompanied by a few of his classmates, dedicated volunteers and family members. His satisfaction and fulfillment are clearly evident to all who know him.

What will Gilad accomplish next? As he’s proven till now – there are no boundaries…
